In-Plant Logistics for Steelworks

At Kobe Steel’s Kakogawa Works, we handle on-site transport for each material in the steelmaking process, including such raw materials as iron ore, coal, and limestone, such semi-finished products as slabs, breams, and billets, and such products as heavy plates and sheets. At the Kobe Wire Rod & Bar Plant, we are involved in the entire production process, from delivering billets to the steelworks to transporting such steel products as steel bars and wire rods around the plant premises. We also ship coal for the Kobe Power Plant.
We contribute to the stable operation of steelworks and other such locations by managing iron ore and coal yards, handling the on-site transport of goods by running and maintaining locomotive tracks, and managing and maintaining conveyor belts used throughout the works while ensuring safety, efficiency, cost effectiveness, and eco-friendliness.

  1. Case 1

Supplying raw materials for blast furnaces at the Kakogawa Works

We stockpile and process iron ore and coal as well as other raw materials for making steel at raw material yards, transporting them as needed to various incineration, pellet and blast furnace plants using reclaimers and conveyor belts. The system—from long-distance transport to the operation of reclaimers and conveyor belts—is monitored and controlled from raw material centers to support the stable operation of blast furnaces.

  2. Case 2

Handling engine transportation within the Kakogawa Works

We use locomotive engines to transport molten iron and steel as well as semi-finished products through a circuit within the Kakogawa Works premises. In addition, the on-site inspection and maintenance of all equipment involved in this process are integral components of production.

  3. Case 3

Providing raw materials to the Kobe Power Plant at Kobe Wire Rod & Bar Plant

Kobelco Logistics transports coal and other raw materials for the Kobe Power Plant (Plants 1–4) . As community-based power plants, these plants are capable of meeting about 70% of Kobe City's peak electricity demand.

  4. Case 4

Handling engine transport at the Kobe Wire Rod & Bar Plant

Locomotives are used to transport half-finished and finished steel products via an internal circuit within the Kobe Wire Rod & Bar Plant. Because the locomotive track’s circuit passes close to roads carrying vehicular traffic, we have striven to ensure that transport engines are highly visible to car drivers, especially at night, in order to avoid accidents. The locomotives are topped with lights and their perimeters are equipped with LED lights aimed toward the ground as a warning to approaching cars.
In such ways we contribute to stable operations by preventing accidents before they occur.
